Welcome to MeTA Zambia

Medicines Transparency Alliance (MeTA) brings together all stakeholders in the medicines market to improve access, availability and affordability of medicines for the one-third of the world’s population to whom access is currently denied. The second phase of MeTA began in August 2011, and is being guided by the World Health Organization and Health Action International, who together provide the secretariat to the seven countries in which the pilot took place during 2009-2010. MeTA Zambia is a multi-stake holder initiative involving the government, private sector and civil society organisations and cooperating partners whose ultimate goal is to improve health outcomes for low income and disadvantaged people in Zambia.

One of MeTA Zambia’s first and urgent duties will be to create individual awareness about medicines and health. The issues listed here are important to the individual as they are to many communities across Zambia. - Access to Medicines Many people in Zambia do not have access to quality and safe medicine. Many people in Zambia die from curable diseases mainly due to lack of access to essential medicine. Besides survey data in Zambia shows evidence of drug diversion from clinics and hospitals to private institutions or to illegal drug stores. In many clinics/hospitals essential medicines are largely unavailable.

MeTA Zambia Work Plan

MeTA Zambia work plan includes the review of pilot phase research and position papers, dissemination of data to the public, workshops on transparency and accountability in the procurement of medicines. These workshops were held in Lusaka on 22 August 2013 at Amaka Lodge and on 27 September 2013 at Wasawange lodge in Livingstone. MeTA Zambia also held CSO sensitization workshops on 27 August 2013 in Solwezi, 29 August 2013 at Fatmols Lodge in Ndola and on 22 October 2013 at TECLA Lodge in Lusaka.
